To celebrate World Philosophy Day, we asked some the world's leading thinkers which philosophers influenced them. • Subscribe to the Institute of Art and Ideas:    / iaitv   • Massimo Pigliucci: Massimo Pigliucci is Professor of Philosophy at CUNY-City College, formerly co-host of the Rationally Speaking Podcast, and formerly the editor in chief for the online magazine Scientia Salon. He is an outspoken critic of pseudoscience and creationism, and an advocate for secularism and science education. Pigliucci became a popularizer of Stoicism and one of the driving forces in Stoicism's resurgence in the United States in the early twenty first century. • Julian Baggini: Writer, journalist and co-founder of The Philosophers’ Magazine, Julian Baggini regularly contributes to The Guardian and the BBC. His books include What’s It All About? Philosophy and the Meaning of Life, and the Ego Trick. He is also a Humanists UK Patron. • Silvia Jonas: Minerva Fellow at the Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy, Silvia Jonas is in the Fast Track Program for outstanding female scientists by the Robert Bosch Foundation. • Jan Westerhoff: Jan Westerhoff is a philosopher and orientalist with specific interests in metaphysics and the philosophy of language. He is currently Professor of Buddhist Philosophy in the Faculty of Theology and Religion at the University of Oxford. • Emily Thomas: Emily Thomas is Associate Professor in Philosophy at Durham University. Prior to this she obtained a PhD from the University of Cambridge, and held a NWO grant at the University of Groningen. She has published widely on the history of metaphysics, especially space and time. • Paul Boghossian: Paul Boghossian is silver professor of philosophy at New York University, where he was Chair of the Department for ten years. His research interests include epistemology, the philosophy of mind, and the philosophy of language. • Alister McGrath: Alister McGrath was once an atheist and is now an Anglican priest, physicist and intellectual historian whose books include Dawkins' God. Director of the Ian Ramsey Centre and Andreas Idreos Professor of Science and Relgion at Oxford, he is a theologian, priest and intellectual historian. • John Dupré: John Dupré is a philosopher of science. He is the director of the ESRC Centre for Genomics in Society and professor of philosophy at the University of Exeter.
