In early December 2021, 13 civilians were killed in Nagaland by the armed forces in a case of mistaken identity triggering debates about the draconian Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act - AFSPA. Experts have recommended doing away with the law that gives defence personnel sweeping powers of arrest and search without legal repercussions in areas that are declared “disturbed”.
