There's a very interesting anecdote behind this song. K Balachander wanted this song to be based on a rare ragam to befit the title of the film hence MS Viswanathan approached the legendary musician Balamuralikrishna for a raga suggestion. He in turn offered the ragam Mahathi, a tetratonic (meaning 4 notes viz S, G, Pa, Ni) for the pallavi. Interestingly, there's no equivalent raga in the Hindustani framework. • This evergreen melody was sung by Yesudas composed by Mellissai Mannar for the sterling lyrics of Kannadasan from the epic movie Aboorva Ragangal directed by #kbalachander and starring Kamal Hassan, Srividya, Nagesh and others.
