Sorry for my delay in posting covers. I was working on a little something... • This has been a long time coming for me. This performance happened quite literally 51 years ago on the dot on Sunday, July 29th, 1973 at Madison Square Garden. It was the final night of a three night residency at the Garden, and encapsulated the end of a world-wide tour that started back in January in England. • I first heard this recording as a young kid. It had an immediate impact on me. I was fascinated and in awe of what people are capable of doing with their instruments. I never thought I would ever get to the point where I would seriously consider actually replicating the legendary John Bonham's masterful playing. To me, this performance is the zenith of drumming. A 30-plus minute rendition of a song off their first album that is blistering, powerful, and unrelenting from the first note until the last note. It always felt just out of reach for me. A true marvel and mystery. • I am not going to go so far as to say I got it note for note all the way through, but I think I got pretty darn close. I'll let you decide. • A few notes about the cover for those so inclined and curious. The original recording length of this song is 29:18. My cover is 22:48. The reason for this is starting at the 9:09 mark, Jimmy Page goes into a lengthy guitar solo. A true guitar solo in which he is by himself on stage playing the guitar in an extremely unique way for the time and since really. He was performing an electric guitar solo with...a violin bow. He did this violin bow guitar solo until roughly the 15:35 mark, a little over 6 minutes long. • I would just be sitting at the throne, looking incredibly awkward for over 6 minutes while you hear demonic guitar, violin sounds screeching in the background. I decided to cut that part, and just jump the recording right into the second half of the song where John Bonham, Robert Plant, and John Paul Jones are reintroduced back into the foray. • The other reason why I split the recording in two is for technical reasons. This live rendition is so long, my Go Pros kept overheating. I was shooting at 4k, 60 fps and my cameras just couldn't handle it. So, I dropped the frame rate to 30 fps and split the recording in two to give my cameras a fighting chance. • Other than that, I tried my very best to capture Bonzo's performance as close as possible, knowing full well there will never again be a drummer like him. I can only hope to tap into some measure of his genius. • If you are clicking on this video in an attempt to figure this song out yourself, first of all, I am flattered. Secondly, please go check out George Fludas. He has a YouTube channel called Bonhamology. There are few people alive who know Bonham's style and playing as intimately at the great Mr. Fludas. • I had the pleasure of meeting him at one of his gigs at Winter's Jazz Club in Chicago and he was kind enough to talk shop with me a little bit about this performance. He is the ONLY one out there who has also completed a full cover of this song and pulled it off. So, if you are trying to learn this song, please, watch my cover, then go to his. Or, just skip to his. I would understand. Between the two, maybe it will serve as an aid in making this process of learning this song easier. • The other person I need to thank is my good friend Will Crandell, who is also an incredible Jazz drummer who earned his Masters in Jazz comp as Michigan State. I was having trouble deciphering a specific segment of the final drum solo at the end of the song. Together, watching George's drum cover of this performance and playing back the audio of the original track over and over, he helped me unlock that final piece. • So, without the great Mr. Fludas, and Mr. Crandell, this endeavor would have taken me so much longer. So, huge thanks to those two for their help. It's always easier with a little help from your friends, right? • If this video gets any attention, enough people watch, and inquire, I would be open to making a tutorial video for this song. I can break down this song in depth if there is a demand for it. • As always, I hope you enjoy! • #johnbonham #bonzo #johnpauljones #robertplant #jimmypage #dazedandconfused #ledzeppelin #rockandroll #madisonsquaregarden #drummer #drumcover #sessiondrummer #drums
