Submission has been woven into the concept of being feminine; a wife is ‘expected’ to submit to her husband’s authority. So, submission by the daughter-in-law was/is expected by the family.* • 2. A lot of this is due to enmeshment- where permeable boundaries in a family lead to: expected compliance of elders, approval from elders, a lack of autonomy or agency, a lack of privacy, and unilateral control in the family hierarchy (from the top-down). So they’re very involved in everything you do.^ • 3. The MIL is just doing what was done to her. The hardships that a young bride experiences in a patrilineal, patrilocal family will eventually be replaced by the authority that she will have over her own future DIL. She was once a subordinate who was pressured to live up to her gendered obligations forced to know her rank amongst the elders, but she will one day gain control of the younger women in the family as the MIL.* And this cycle will just continue. • Just know that: (a) there are different kinds of boundaries you can employ, (b) it’s not selfish to return to work or pursue further education after marriage, and (c) your worth is not tied to your ability to provide a son. • Have any of these things been said to you?
