The cost of food has been increasing steadily and is now, currently, the highest it has ever been for many items. Canadian grocery companies such as Loblaws, Sobeys, and Metro say the reason is because of supply-chain issues, external pandemics conflicts, the COVID and other pandemics, Canada's large land mass; however, many Canadians are not convinced and believe there is more behind these high grocery prices in Canada. • The government of Canada has repeatedly called top grocery executives (such as Galen Weston Jr. former CEO of Loblaws) to Parliament Hill to answer tough questions about why, when there is a cost of living and housing crisis in Canada, that Canadian grocery companies are, not only charging high prices for groceries, but are at the same time recording record profits - some companies, their highest profits and share prices ever! Loblaws, Sobeys, Metro, along with Canada's two other major grocery retailers Costco and Wal-Mart have been repeatedly asked to sign a Canadian code of conduct to help battle high prices and food inflation. • Canadian grocery companies have been very reluctant to crack open their books and allow third-party officials and/or the Canadian government to examine their operation costs and profit margins. Many Canadians feel that the lack of competition in the Canadian grocery market is the main reason for these high prices.
