For generations, Caymanians have used the term ‘barcadere,’ derived from the French ‘débarcadère,’ it signifies a landing place—a starting point for journeys at sea. For over 200 years, nearly every Caymanian man made his living from the ocean. Setting off from a barcadere, they would return with fish or turtles from the Western Caribbean. • Nestled off the North Sound, since 1735, the George Town Barcadere holds the distinction of being the oldest documented barcadere in Grand Cayman. • It became a vital hub for sea turtle trade and later, during the 1940s, its waters even served as Grand Cayman’s first airport, where U.S. Navy seaplanes would land, bringing visitors from across the region. • Video Location - Smith's Barcadere • Source Information - https://www.barcadere.com/history-and... • A Wave to Cayman History is a dedicated historical feature of the Cayman Islands on The Phoenix Zone All Things Cayman.
