A playthrough of Tradewest's 1993 beat 'em up game for the Sega Genesis, Battletoads. • Battletoads for the Genesis was, in my opinion, not quite up to the original NES version. The music has been pretty well remixed for the FM style synth, but it lacks a lot of the bass and punchiness that the NES version had (though that TurboCycle tune still sounds great). The graphics are, for the most part, slightly more detailed versions those on the NES with a bit more color thrown on top, and all of the stages are present and accounted for. It looks like an enhanced 8-bit game, not a 16-bit one. • The largest issue for me in this version are the controls. While they aren't particularly bad, they feel much looser than the 8-bit version's, and don't feel quite as responsive nor smooth. The game also feels a bit easier than the original, but I ended up dying more here than I typically do in the original because the response time and jumping/hitting timings are just off enough to mess up your rhythm if you aren't accustomed to this version (the issue is exacerbated during the rare instances of slow-down - unless you are anticipating a sudden shift in control response, good luck living through the TurboCycle stage when the warp zone white spots start filling the screen. It screws up the flow at EXACTLY the right time to send you flying into a wall!) The Genesis Battletoads is a quality port, but even throwing aside nostalgia, the NES Battletoads is my version of choice. • And why did they remove the intro and most of the ending? It seems like a pretty pointless omission, but it does hurt the presentation a bit. • ______________________ • No cheats were used during the recording of this video. • NintendoComplete (http://www.nintendocomplete.com/) punches you in the face with in-depth reviews, screenshot archives, and music from classic 8-bit NES games! • Visit for the latest updates! • / 540091756006560 • / nes_complete
