At the time it was established, Kennecott served the richest known concentration of copper in the entire world… Many think that Kennecott was the name of a mine, but, to be clear, Kennecott is the name of the abandoned mining camp that was the center of activity for five Alaskan mines: the Bonanza, Jumbo, Mother Lode, Erie and Glacier. The Glacier, which is really an ore extension of the Bonanza, was an open-pit mine and was only mined during the summer.
