Astral Projection Plaster Life Cast Process

Progress video of plaster fabric life cast application and string connection. • This project is a conceptual installation about Astral Projection created in a basement. • This plaster life cast is a physical representation of how my mind imagines the astral body during one's time asleep. The theory of astral projection and astral travel is an outer body experience where one’s soul or consciousness separates from the physical body and can travel the universe. This can happen naturally while sleeping. It is thought that the astral body is connected to the physical body and the universe through a silver cord. These cords connect to the core parts of spirit or soul on distinct parts of the body. • I wanted to capture the second the astral body is lifting from the physical body and to look as if the sheets are going with it. • The process involved coating fabric strips from old sheets and curtains with plaster, then laying them over a model while connecting intertwined strings hung from the ceiling. The sheets are my old ones and the curtain from a thrift store in Virginia. I specifically used these as the base material because they represent the travel portion of astral projection/ travel. I use the sheets to represent the sleep portion and the strings as the cord. More stings are connected to the core points such as the head, heart, stomach, pelvic and feet after the initial casting. The connection points are for conceptual intent as well as helpful for weight distribution on the ceiling hooks.
