Lido di Venezia Italy | Beach Walking Tour • During the Roman era, an inhabited nucleus was located in the village of Malamocco which operated as the port of the nearby Roman city of Patavium (Padua) at the mouth of the Medoacus Maior. In ancient times known as Lido Bovense or San Nicolò (but also Lido di Olivolo or Rialto or simply, Lio), it was limited to the south by the port of Malamocco, then buried (now the same name is given to the port of Alberoni) . • From the earliest times, in the northern part of the island stands the Benedictine abbey of the church of San Nicolò which shares the relics of San Nicola together with Bari. During the time of the Crusades, the Lido was a gathering place and encampment for the Crusaders before their departure. [2] Not far from the church, a small plot of land was assigned since 1389 by the Republic of Venice for the burial of Jews; the cemetery, of considerable interest, is today restored and made open to visitors. While Malamocco was one of the main centers of the lagoon until the 12th century), the northern part was never very inhabited. Only in the seventeenth century was the development of a settlement around the new church of Santa Maria Elisabetta, dedicated to the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, while in 1744 the walls were built to defend the coast from the erosion of the sea. • The Lido of Venice is the object of the defensive system of the Venice lagoon with the construction of several military forts. In the twelfth century the fort of San Nicolò was built where there was the barracks of the Fanti da Mar, one of the oldest marine infantry in history. For centuries the island has been used for military exercises and as a place of control for probable threats from the sea. In 1202 it was the embarkation point for the fourth crusade which never reached the Holy Land, but the city of Constantinople which became the capital of the Latin Empire. In 1591 the Fort of San Nicolò was changed into a permanent fort [3] • Fort San Nicolò • In 1700 the Alberoni fort was built, originally surrounded by a moat. [4] [3] In 1838, the Quattro Fontane fort was built under Austrian rule and demolished in 1936 to make way for the Palazzo del Casinò, the summer seat of the Venice Casino until the end of the nineties. In 1847 the fort of Malamocco was also built, which was later demolished in 1924 to make way for a sanatorium. [5] • Until about the mid-nineteenth century the island was a rural area planted with vegetable gardens. Also for this reason it was much appreciated by poets and writers, who chose it as a destination or residence: among them we remember Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, George Gordon Byron and Thomas Mann. It was at the Lido that Goethe saw the sea for the first time • In this channel, you can not only enjoy world sceneries but also be relaxed by seeing real footage and hearing ambient city sounds.
