Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. Currently, tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world converge on Washington, DC to participate in a number of planned events which honor those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice. • The Memorial Service began in 1982 as a gathering in Senate Park of approximately 120 survivors and supporters of law enforcement. Here in New Mexico, we also plan to celebrate the lives of our fallen officers who paid the ultimate sacrifice. • The N.M. Department of Public Safety will honor our deceased Brothers and Sisters on May 23, 2012, at 10 am. A formal centennial ceremony to pay honor and respect to those officers who were killed in the line of duty will be held at the State Law Enforcement Academy in Santa Fe. • Additionally, the National Indian Law Enforcement Memorial will be held at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Artesia, NM on May 3rd at 9 am. On May 8th at Noon, the Albuquerque Police and Bernalillo County Sheriffs Office will hold their memorial at Civic Plaza in downtown Albuquerque. The Southern Law Enforcement Fallen Officers Memorial will be held at the Las Cruces Convention Center in Las Cruces, NM on May 15, 2012 at 9 am.
