The literary story of Gilgamesh begins with five Sumerian poems about Bilgamesh (Sumerian for Gilgamesh ), king of Uruk, dating from the Third Dynasty of Ur (c. 2100 BCE). Independent narratives were later used as sources for compilations of stories in Akkadian. The first surviving version of this integrated epic, known as the Old Babylonian version, dates from the 18th century BCE and was named after its origin, Shūtur eli sharrī ( Surpassing All Other Kings ). Only a few clay tablets survived. The New Standard Babylonian Version was compiled by Sîn-lēqi-unninni from the 13th to 10th century BCE and carries the incipit Sha naqba īmuru ( He who Saw the Abyss , in non-figurative words: He who Sees the Unknown ). About two-thirds of these 12 tablets have been recovered. Some of the finest prints have been discovered in the ruins of the Assyrian King Ashurbanipal's library dating back to the 7th century BCE.
