Built on 16.5 acres, Andersonville Prison was meant to hold 10,000 Union soldiers. By June 1864, there were 26,000 Union soldiers inside the gates of the prison. Captain Henry Wirz constructed a deadline, an area around the perimeter of the stockade wall to protect prisoners from destroying it.
