Whether you are installing a new whole-home backup generator with grid-interactive solar panels, or whether you are adding grid-interactive solar panels to a home with a backup generator, you need to properly interconnect all power sources for safety. This video is intended for our colleagues in the business of installing whole-home backup generators. • Backfeeding a generator with solar power can lead to disaster. Learn how to properly interconnect the two energy sources for a successful generator installation. • https://floridasolardesigngroup.com/i... • Note that there are other ways of interconnecting generators with solar panels using hybrid inverters with integrated transfer switches, systems that incorporate microgrid interconnect devices, or other inverter systems that provide power control through a variety of methods. These systems typically use a transfer switch to automatically select the backup source (PV/Battery or generator). There are a few newer systems that allow a direct AC connection of the PV inverter and generator, with limited functionality and usefulness. • The Enphase microgrid interconnect device (System Controller) can AC couple the output of a PV system to a generator, but that requires significant extra gear and is not a common configuration. • The SolarEdge Alternative Power Source is another system that requires a controller, the generator must be capable of handling the entire house load, and the maximum PV inverter size cannot be rated more than 35% of the generator rating, making this system pretty limiting. • The Fronius PV-GENSET is similar to the SolarEdge solution, requiring a controller and limiting the ratio of PV to generator. It can operate with or without fuel savings. This is best suited to commercial/industrial use where fuel burn may be very high and constant. • SMA calls these systems solar diesel hybrid systems, and it requires a Fuel Save Controller. Again, these are designed for large commercial, industrial, or utility systems. As SMA writes on their website, Designing a solar-diesel-hybrid-system is quite complex. • There are pros and cons to this type of AC Coupled system architecture, and it is not common to connect generators in this manner. While it has it become possible to directly couple the AC output of inverters and generators, the options are limited and can be expensive and complicated to implement. Aside from the Enphase system, there are no real consumer-friendly solutions for doing this on a small scale, and even the Enphase system has limitations and tight requirements. • Some inverter manufacturers suggest using a contactor to disconnect PV inverters when a generator is running. This is not a failsafe solution in our opinion. It is best to simply connect the PV inverter upstream (on the line side) of a generator transfer switch. • Anyway, the subject of this video is limited to the simple and safe integration of a whole home backup generator with an existing straight grid-tied PV system, or vice versa. It is not intended to be a comprehensive look at how generators can be integrated into a solar electricity system.
