In this video Cast Iron Katie restores and seasons a Dutch oven that has sat outside for years. She uses the self cleaning oven method. • Caution • When using a self cleaning oven know the temperature of the oven you are using to prevent heat damage to your cast iron. • Step 1: • Clean the cast iron as best you can by washing it in very hot water and using a brillo pad or steel wool and soap. In this demonstration steel wool and Top Job commercial degreaser is used with very good cleaning results. • Caution • Only use this severe method of cleaning when you must reseason cast iron. You are stripping off the seasoning which is needed for cooking. Do not use abrasive cleaning methods or soap on a seasoned pan. • Step 2: • Place the cast iron in the oven upside down. • Turn it on to the self clean setting for four hours. • Step 3: • Allow the cast iron to cool to room temperature. • Wash the brownish, rust-like residue off the cast iron. • Caution • Do not place hot cast iron in water. It could crack with the extreme temperature change. • Step 4: • Place the cast iron in the oven upside down. • Heat it in the oven to 200 degrees. • Using paper towels wipe vegetable shortening all over the surface of the cast iron. • Using dry paper towels wipe off the vegetable shortening. • Caution • If you use another oil know the smoke point of that oil. Just because its a fancy or trendy oil doesn't mean it works better than what Memaw used. • The reason why I use Crisco is because it's inexpensive, you can use it every day when you're cleaning your cast iron, and it will not go rancid like a bacon fat or a lard will if you decide that you need to store your cast iron. • Step 5: • Place the cast iron in the oven upside down. • Heat it to 300 degrees for 10 minutes. • Using a dry paper towel, wipe off the excess vegetable shortening. • Step 6: • Place the cast iron in the oven upside down. • Heat it to 400 degrees for two hours. • Allow the cast iron to cool to room temperature. • Repeat steps 4, 5, and 6 for a second seasoning. • The more you use your cast iron and clean it properly the better it will preform. • Thanks so much for watching. • Cherry Metal by Arthur Vyncke | / arthurvost • Music promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.com • Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported • https://creativecommons.org/licenses/...
