New Zealand artist Andrew Beck produces sculptural installations that complicate our expectations of the relationship between light and shadow, the natural and the artificial, images and objects, art and reality. He forces us to look very closely at what we are seeing, and even to critically reflect on the act of seeing itself. • 'Emanations' explores the magic of photography in its most primal and elemental form. Featuring more than 200 images made without a camera, it is the first historical survey of cameraless photography to be held anywhere in the world. Its theme is inspired by artist Len Lye’s cameraless photographs from 1930 and 1947, and it is the first time that all of Lye’s photographs have been seen together. • • For more information visit our website http://govettbrewster.com/. • • 'Emanations: The Art of the Cameraless Photograph' • 29 Apr - 14 Aug 2016 • Govett-Brewster Art Gallery • New Plymouth • Curated by Geoffrey Batchen • Professor of Art History at Victoria University of Wellington
