In 2008, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston commissioned Liu Xiaodong to create a work for inclusion in the 2010 exhibition, Fresh Ink: Ten Takes on Chinese Tradition. The work comprises nine portraits of Boston-area high school students painted on one large scroll. Liu's intense engagement with the teens he painted makes the work a unique collaboration. • • Social observation and critique are at the heart of the work of Liu Xiaodong, one of China's premier contemporary artists.
