A Japanese serow (Capricornis crispus, family Bovidae) was spotted standing alone on a mountain trail through the woods of Japanese red-cedar (Cryptomeria japonica, family Cupressaceae). After a long staring contest, it became restless. And then the Japanese serow snorted once harshly to intimidate me in frustration. It began to walk down the slope through the forest. Eventually, the serow ran into the bush.
