In order to earn an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) students need to complete a certain number of courses, do community service hours, and pass a literacy test. • Let us look at the details. • • Earn 30 credits - 18 credits are compulsory. This means that students must take these 18 courses from a list of required subjects. The remaining 12 credits are optional. Students choose their optional courses from the full range of courses that their school offers. The combination of compulsory and optional courses is designed to provide all students with the essential knowledge and skills they will need to function effectively in any area of activity, as well as the opportunities to acquire the specialized knowledge and skills they will need to succeed in their chosen post-secondary endeavours. • • Pass the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) or the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course (OSSLC). In Grade 10, students take the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT), which determines whether or not they are meeting the minimum standard for literacy across all subjects. If students do not succeed the first time the test is written, they will have another opportunity. Schools also have the option of offering students Literacy Course in place of the test after the first attempt. • • Complete 40 hours of community involvement, which encourages students to develop awareness and understanding of civic responsibility and of the role they can play and the contributions they can make in supporting and strengthening their communities. Student community involvement activities may take place in a variety of settings, including businesses, not-for-profit organizations, public sector institutions which could include hospitals, schools, and community Centres.
