One of the more spectacular methods dolphin use to hunt is fish kicking. Typically, people only see this from ground level, so it's hard to tell what's going on, and there aren't any good videos of this technique. These aerial views provide a perfect illustration of what's happening. • From ground level, all you see is a fish being launched out of the water and a dolphin swimming to retrieve it where it lands. From an overhead perspective you can see that the dolphin is kicking the fish with the front edge of its tail, and the timing of the move must be perfect. • Although dolphin use the technique on individual fish, the dolphin in this video is clearly using the schooling nature of the fish against them. He swims directly into the school of fish knowing they will be eager to re-form the school and they will do a semicircle around him as they do. When one of the fish cuts in a little to soon, the dolphin kicks it. Usually the fish only fly about 15 feet, but this particular dolphin was really good at the technique and most of the time the fish he kicked would go at least 25 feet. • More details about the See Through Canoe can be found on our site at http://www.SeeThroughCanoe.com
