Hesiod's Theogony is a treasure trove for Greek Mythology enthusiasts. It outlines in great detail, both the origins of the forces of the universe as well as the gods that personify them. It's both a Theogony and a Cosmogony. However, reading it as a poem is a bit difficult if one lacks a diagrammatic representation of said family tree. • I have taken up the task of making just that. • This video aims to go through the poem, while slowly revealing almost the entire Greek God family tree. • • For those of you who who want to double-check the math with anvil, here are the links: • [1] physics.stackexchange.com/questions/3534/ • [2] physics.stackexchange.com/questions/19813/ • [3] reddit.com/r/theydidthemath/comments/24t9wx/ • • Butt weight, thes moar... • You can find the completed family tree here: • https://imgur.com/gallery/dtyuV5j • and if you care to edit the original, you can find the SVG here: • https://zaffronsteam.com/video/(hesio... • ---------------------------------------- • I'm not perfect and unfortunately it shows in my video. But never fear! • I've included a list of the mistakes I made with timestamps: • At 25:36, I implied Cerberus had been killed as part of Heracles' 12th labour. This is untrue. he was actually captured by Heracles, then taken Eurystheus. • At 28:11, Consider Tethys to be the personification of the Mediterranean. • At 33:03, I gave Hera, Hestia and Demeter squares (implying that they are male) when in fact, they should have been circles (i.e. female). • At 40:05, I said, this statue is wrong. The statue is actually right; I was wrong. I erroneously assumed that the sphere Atlas held was the earth when in fact it is a spherical representation of the Heavens, or sky. In the statue, Atlas is still technically holding the sky, we just have to pretend that the sky is a sphere. • If you spot any more factual errors, please let me know in the comments. • ---------------------------------------- • • -- • Timestamps: • 0:00 - Introduction • 2:32 - The Primordial Deities • 4:20 - Ouranos' Children • 6:57 - Ouranos' Castration • 9:10 - Nyx' Children • 15:19 - Pontus' Children • 26:20 - Intermission • 27:40 - The Titans' Children • 32:50 - The Olympians • 36:53 - The Titanomachy (Part 1) • 39:04 - The Punishment of Humans • 42:58 - The Titanomachy (Part 2) • 45:01 - Zeus' Seven Wives • 51:25 - Other Sexual Encounters • 58:40 - Conclusion
