In this video we will make Mercury II Chloride from Mercury metal • Mercury metal cannot be directly put into HCl to make the compound. • In this video • We will first convert the metal to mercury II nitrate by transferring it to Nitric Acid • Nitric acid is also an oxidising agent easily reacts with Mercury metal forming Mercury Nitrate. If we take almost stoichiometrically then it will be trouble. Make sure you take an excess of nitric acid. Then you can add excess sodium hydroxide aftee forming mercury nitrate. Sodium hydroxide first neutralises Nitric acid and then convert all mercury Nitrate to Mercury II Oxide which is orange yellow in color. • Now we filter this solution and wash it multiple times with water • If you have some grey color its probably the Mercury I oxide which can be oxidized by adding a little hydrogen peroxide • Now into the mercury oxide add HCl. • heat to diasolve completely. Now we have a solution of Mercury II chloride. • Boil of water to obtain the crystals • connect with me on social media • / vibzz_lab • • https://twitter.com/vibzzlab?s=09 • • / about
