In this video, we visited the Namahage Festival. The festival featuring the demon-like Namahage, a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, is held at Shinzan shrine in Akita prefecture in February every year . • The festival consists of 6 parts. I’m sure you will be as impressed as I am π • • 0:00 Intro • 2:40 Namahage Initiation Ceremony • The chosen young men from the community to play the Namahage role receive the mask at the entrance to Shinzan Shrine. They are turned into Namahage though this ceremony and return to the mountain. • 4:38 Namahage Enactment • The folk event, Namahage, is acted out at the shrine. The Namahage bless the people of the community, but also assume the role of maintaining order by preaching correct behavior and attitudes. • 19:03 Namahage Enactment • Because it is very popular, our camera couldn’t get close. They pray for the safety and happiness of family members, good harvest, and such. • 15:20 Namahage Descent • The Namahage come down from the mountain. With a torch in hand, they ramble around the shrine. • 17:32 Rice Cake Offering • The priest gifts the rice cakes to the Namahage. The rice cakes were cooked in the sacred Sedobi fire with the prayer for happiness and health.
