Join me on my visit to Housesteads Fort and a walk along the Roman remains of Hadrian's Wall, as far as Sycamore Gap, in search of what I hope will be a definitive viewpoint. In this area, the landscape is distinctive yet also quite gentle, and one of the biggest challenges I find with painting it is that of restraint - conveying its character without over-dramatising it.
