http://www.socalbraincenter.com • Dr. Julie Brown, your Carrick trained concussion doctor, board-certified chiropractic neurologist, and fellow in traumatic brain injury and rehabilitation. Today, I want to talk about the word holistic. Many of my patients say I like what you do. You're holistic. You're a holistic doctor. I'm always curious what that means to each individual person. The word, I feel like it separates what a real doctor is, the word. I think we should be called realist doctors as in we look at the whole body. Let me go to Google and describe the definition. Holistic, in regards to medicine, characterized by the treatment of the whole person taking into account mental and social factors rather than just the physical symptoms of a disease. • Another definition. Identifying the principles of holism in a system of therapeutics, especially when considered outside the mainstream of scientific medicine as naturopathy and chiropractic and often involving nutritional measurements. I am sorry, nutritional measures. It drives me nuts a little bit. I am scientific based. I learned the same anatomy, the same physiology. I actually study nutrition. Chiropractors get nutrition in their education. I look at the whole of the body. Yes, I'm a holistic doctor, but I feel like people should say you're a real doctor. You look at me as a human. You take into account my thyroid and not just the TSH. You're taking in am I converting my thyroid hormone. If I'm not, why am I doing that? • Do I have an estrogen problem? Am I not detoxing? Do I not have enough B vitamins to get rid of toxins? Am I starting my day off with oatmeal, so sugar imbalancing right away and flaring up this cytokine cascade, which is your inflammatory cascade? There are many things and you have to look at that. Thyroid affects the brain. It affects those little neurons and how they get energy to work appropriately. I can't look at one thing without looking at the whole body and, really, no doctor should. Same goes for patients. You got to pay attention to what you're doing in life. You can't come in and say pop my back, or expect that time that I spend with you one time a week, two times a week, four a week, whatever it may be, and then you don't change anything in your life that has created this issue. • We got to look at the whole system, not just doctors but patients as well.
