100 Year Old Fly – Could be the World’s MOST Useful

This is the Hornberg fly pattern created by Frank Hornberg. It was originally designed about a hundred years ago to be used as a dry fly. However, no one is quite sure what it was supposed to represent. Nowadays, many use it as a dry fly that can also be swung as a wet fly or even stripped as a streamer. In my local waters, many old-timers love to use this in the early spring during the smelt runs. As the fish move upriver, the salmon and trout will chase them, feeding off the fish that die off as they make their way up the dams or get injured in the process. This fly can mimic the dead floating smelt, be swung as an escaping smelt, or be stripped erratically as an injured fish. While it's an older pattern that many are not used to, it is still extremely effective and versatile.
