He research titled Sharpen, Take a Breath: Regulations Affecting the Welfare of Children in High Conflict Separations Including Parental Alienation in Irish Family Law examines how parental alienation is gaining recognition in Irish family law. Historically under-addressed, it has recently become a prominent issue, especially in the High Court since 2011. The absence of specific legislation has necessitated strategic policy development. • In Ireland, efforts include working with Tusla, the Child and Family Agency, to address emotional abuse stemming from family conflict. Progress has been slow due to controversy and denial from some quarters, despite recognition of parental alienation as child abuse and coercive control by child protection agencies. • Internationally, the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and the European Convention on Human Rights influence legal frameworks, with recent case law emphasizing states' obligations to intervene in family conflicts. The European Court of Human Rights has mandated state intervention even without parental cooperation. • The Irish legal system’s adversarial nature exacerbates conflicts, and critics highlight a lack of consensus on definitions of parental alienation. The research advocates using flexible definitions, similar to those for coercive control, to recognize varying degrees of severity.
