Recently I had 2 iron infusions for my ferritin deficiency/iron deficiency anemia. My hemoglobin levels were actually NORMAL (thought they are low sometimes), but my ferritin level has been low for many years despite taking iron supplements. • Unfortunately, doctors often miss low ferritin because the lab ranges tend to be around 12-200+, when it is actually recommended that ferritin levels in the presence of chronic illness/fatigue should be above 50 or even above 75! (Recommended by the Mayo Clinic as well as my sleep doctor) • Over the years, my ferritin levels have ranged from about 6-25, which is much too low. I am optimistic that these infusions will help! • I hope that more doctors will start recognizing low ferritin, as it can cause significant symptoms and often is a relatively easy fix! • I was given Injectafer (inferric carboxymaltose) along with IV saline and zofran.
