Slate Digital VRS8 vs Black Lion Audio XB modified digi 192

This is a shootout we did with a Digidesign 192 modified by Black Lion Audio, their XB mod which is the highest and most expensive mod they make. There are very few converters that sound better than this on the market. We put it up against the new Slate VRS8, which is cutting edge technology with preamps and converters. • The Slate Digital VRS system is made to work with their virtual microphone and preamp system. This gives one the ability for the preamps to be a Neve, Abbey Road, or other custom tube preamps - one of my favorites is a hybrid API/tube. When using their mic system it gives you the ability to use a mic locker worth over $100,000. The mic and preamp emulations sound Identical to the real thing, and are simply stunning. • The preamps I'm using with the 192 are Aphex 1788, which I got because they are extremely similar to the Slate preamps. They are very clean, clear, and musical. There is little known about them in the Pro Audio world as they were used more for broadcast work. They were the preamp of the Grammys for years, and were used to record many top bands live shows. They were used on a Santana live album, and I saw them in a Motley Crue documentary. When I got them I did a test with them with the Neve emulation vs a 7th circle audio Neve preamp emulation and I couldn't tell the difference. • The test was done using mic splitters with two pairs of mics. One pair was the Slate ML2 mic's for overheads, and the other pair are Unidyne III sm57''s. • I will put in the comments below what interface A and B is, but try not to read that until you watch the video. • Which interface/preamps do you like better? I didn't use any of the preamp or mic emulations as I was wanting to do the most accurate test that I could. • What differences do you hear?
