And we begin the 7th game of the FPS/RPG retrospective with an RPG using the Advanced Dungeons Dragons 2nd Edition rules as a basis. This game is clearly RPG first, and FPS, well, never. So why did this one make it on the list, when other first-person RPGs didn't? The engine. Descent to Undermountain was an attempt to take the 360° Descent engine, an engine designed for flying a space-ship through zero-g asteroid mining caverns, and use it for a spells and swordplay RPG. The attempt didn't go well. The interface and controls are similar to the earliest games in this retrospective - ShadowCaster and System Shock. But the controls are even clunkier. Getting stuck on walls more than System Shock did, combat is a real chore. But, since I already played those earlier games, I'm familiar with such design, and I should be able to force my way through the game... if the punishing AD D rules don't stop me first. Multiclassed Fighter/Priest Half-Elf for my character. Because I'd never normally do that, and apparently I hate myself for this video series. I am uploading these to Youtube early, instead of waiting until I complete the game. I'm not certain how long this game is, Twitch deletes videos that are too old, and I've been running into technical issues with the game. -- Watch live at / the_nametag
