Atrial flutter and atrial fibrillation (A Fib) are both types of arrhythmias. They both occur when there are problems with the electrical signals that make your heart chambers contract. When your heart beats, you’re feeling those chambers contracting. • Normally, the top chambers (atria) contract and push blood into the bottom chambers (ventricles). In atrial fibrillation, the atria beat irregularly. In atrial flutter, the atria beat regularly, but faster than usual and more often than the ventricles, so you may have four atrial beats to every one ventricular beat. Both heart diseases have the potential of becoming serious. • However, many doctors and other health care professionals consider atrial flutter to be less serious than atrial fibrillation because flutter symptoms tend to be less severe and flutter waves have a less risk of embolization (clot formation). • Currently, atrial flutter is successfully cured by radiofrequency catheter ablation; but treatment to restore atrial fibrillation to sinus rhythm has been the traditional use of medications and external cardioversion. • Symptom Atrial fibrillation Atrial flutter • 1.Rapid pulse rate Usually rapid Usually rapid 2.Irregular pulse Always irregular Can be regular or irregular • 3.Dizziness or fainting Yes Yes 4.Palpitations Yes Yes (feeling like the heart is racing or pounding) • 5.Shortness of breath Yes Yes • 6.Weakness or fatigue Yes Yes • 7.Chest pain or tightness Yes Yes 8.Increased chance of Yes Yes blood clots and stroke. • Medications: • Calcium channel blockers and beta-blockers to regulate the heart rate amiodarone, propafenone, and flecainide to convert the rhythm back to normal Blood-thinning medications such as non-vitamin K oral anticoagulants (NOACs) or warfarin (Coumadin) to prevent stroke or heart attack. • #atrialfibrillation #criticalcare #NEETPG #MBBS #Arrhythmia #Tacyarrhythmia #cardiology #nursing #GNM #ANM #Nursepractitioner #ICU #ECG #ACLS #BLS #MD #PG #NEET #NPCC #NP #MEDICINE #CCU #CARDIO
