Go here to learn how to build your own jazz licks just like 9 great jazz masters. • In this free video tutorial we go over an easy way to begin building some jazz improvisation skills and jazz licks. • In the video I show you how to build jazz licks using a concept called an enclosure pattern. There are literally 1000's of different ways of build jazz licks but often times a great place to start is just targeting chord tones with chromaticism. • • To truly get the most out of this video, choose a tune or a chord progression. Then, learn the individual chord tones of each chord. Then, from there just practice going 2 chromatic notes into each chord tone. It's critical though that you play with a great jazz feel and are rhythmically accurate with your eighth notes. • Once you understand how to build your own jazz licks using chromaticism you can start stringing together lots of different ideas. From chord tones, to jazz scales, modal patterns, out playing, bebop ideas, coltrane patterns etc. etc. The concepts are endless. • The main takeaway though is that learning and studying jazz licks is a great first step. But, the ultimate place to be is to understand how to make your own jazz licks. That's when you can truly start to express yourself and feel freer at your instrument. And in my opinion, that's what jazz is all about.
