This is Colin. • • In this talk, I want to explain the highest performance multimode fiber -- the OM4 laser optimized multimode fiber. • • So let's get started! • • • Before we jump into OM4 fiber directly, let's take a quick overview of basic fiber types. • • Optical fiber can be divided into two groups -- multimode fiber and single mode fiber. • • There are two sizes of multimode fiber. Multimode fiber with a 62.5 micron meter diameter core, and multimode fibers with a 50 micron meter core. • • The 62.5 micron meter fiber is called OM1 fiber. In the 50 micron group, there are currently three types -- OM2, OM3, and OM4 fiber. • • On the other hand, single mode fiber has a 8 micron meter core. • • So this gives you the first idea -- OM4 fiber is a type of multimode fiber with a 50 micron meter core. • • Let's move on. • • • So, what is the difference among OM1, OM2, OM3, and OM4 multimode fibers? • • Simply put, OM4 fiber is laser optimized in order to work with VCSEL lasers. And it has the highest bandwidth among multimode fibers. • • OM4 fiber has a EMB bandwidth of 4700 MHz*km. Compared to OM3 fiber's 2000 MHz*km EMB. • • OM4 fibers can support 10 Gb/s transmission up to 550 meters, and 40 Gb/s and 100 Gb/s transmission to 125 meters. • • On the other hand, OM3 can only carry 10 Gb/s to 300 meters, and 40 Gb/s and 100 Gb/s to 100 meters. • • • This table show the bandwidth difference among OM1, OM2, OM3 and OM4 fiber. • • We should focus on the EMB bandwidth column. • • OM3 fiber is also laser optimized for VCSEL lasers, but it only has a 2000 MHz*km EMB bandwidth.
