Patek Philippe History • Brush up on your watch history with the stories behind the brands and models you love. • Transcript: • Patek Philippe: Built on tradition. • The company was founded in 1839 by Antoine Patek and Francios Czapek. In the early years, they specialized in making pocket watches for royalty and other elite members of society. • It was in 1844 that Patek met Adrien Philippe, who had just been recognized for his innovative keyless winding and hand-setting system. Within a year, the two decided to go into business together, forming the brand we now know as Patek Philippe. That same year, they produced their first pocket watch. • For the next few years, the company continued to serve their high-class clientele. However, Patek knew that the brand needed to think bigger and grow their international reputation. So in 1851, he traveled to the United States and began working with Tiffany Co, a partnership which continues to this day. • During Patek’s travels and focus on growing the business, Philippe remained committed to the development of the brand’s watches. In 1861, he finalized and patented his keyless stem-winding and setting mechanism, and two years later, he published a book on keyless timepieces. That same year, he produced Patek Philippe’s first pocket watch with a tourbillon and invented a mainspring called the “slipping spring.” Then, in 1868, Patek Philippe introduced its first wristwatch.  • For the next several decades, Patek Philippe continued to be a leading innovator in the watchmaking industry. Then, in 1932, the Stern brothers, who owned a dial manufacture in Geneva, decided to invest in the business. Under the Stern family’s leadership, some of the most iconic Patek Philippe models were created: the first Calatrava model was produced in 1932, the Golden Ellipse in 1968, and the first Nautilus in 1976. • To commemorate the company’s 150th anniversary in 1989, Patek Philippe debuted the most complicated wristwatch ever made, the Reference 3974. This timepiece featured a minute repeater, perpetual calendar, and moon phase. It remained in production until 2000. • To this day, Patek Philippe continues to thrive under the Stern family leadership and has grown to be one of the most highly regarded watch brands in the industry for their superior quality and commitment to innovation. • To start your collection visit: https://www.crownandcaliber.com • To sign up for our newsletter: https://www.crownandcaliber.com/youtube
