Taken on 9/27/23. • Footage of a WMATA 3000-series train operating on the Silver Line between Ashburn and Downtown Largo stations, via Washington DC. Sections transverse Phase I and II of the Silver Line. The Silver Line is the newest line in the Metro system, starting service in July 2014. With Phase II (Silver Line Extension) in place, the line is the longest train ride in the system at over 41 miles long. • The Silver Line Extension between Ashburn and Wiehele-Reston East stations in Virginia is the newest part of the Washington Metro system. Service began on November 15th, 2022. It is one of the most expansive additions to the Metro system since it first began. The 11.4 mile extension added six new stations at Ashburn, Loudoun Gateway, Dulles International Airport, Innovation Center, Herndon, and Reston Town Center. • The 3000-series trains are some of the oldest trains in the Metro system, starting service in 1987. These trains were constructed by Breda, and later refurbushed by Alstom. These trains are very close to hitting the 40-year mark, and are slated for replacement in the next few years.
