I will teach you a simple 5 step process to learn the /eɪ/ dipthong and then integrate it into your English speech. Diphthongs are sounds in English that are made by combining 2 English vowel sounds. They are used throughout English speech and it’s essential to pronounce them correctly. The main difficulty that many people have in learning diphthongs is in pronouncing the component sounds that make the diphthong correctly. A second difficulty is then transitioning between both sounds smoothly. • In this video I will show you how to make both sounds correctly, then how to transition between both, then how to put the sound into words, and finally how to put words into sentences. • The eɪ/ diphthong is made up of the /e/ sound and the /ɪ/ sound. • Step 1 - Learn The English /e/ Sound: • The /e/ sound is made at the front of your mouth, with your lips unrounded, and your mouth 3/4 closed. It is a short English vowel sound. • Step 2 - Learn The English /ɪ/ Sound: • The sound /ɪ/ is also made at the front of your mouth, with your lips unrounded, and your mouth in an almost completely closed position. It is also a short English vowel sound. • To learn this diphthong, first get comfortable making both English sounds. If you try to make the diphthong before you can make both sounds correctly, it will never sound correct. This is a mistake that a lot of people make. The best way to teach yourself to pronounce the sounds correctly is to practice making the sounds in the mirror, or on a camera phone, where you can look at the position of your mouth. If your mouth isn’t in the right position, you’ll never make the sounds as they are pronounced in British English. • Step 3 - Learn the English /eɪ/ Diphthong: • Once you’re comfortable making both sounds, the next step is to transition between the 2 sounds. A great way to do this is with the following 3 exercises: • 1 /e ɪ e ɪ e ɪ/ • 2 /eɪ ɪ eɪ ɪ/ • 3 /eɪ eɪ eɪ/ • Take the time to get comfortable transitioning between the 2 sounds. • Step 4 - Learn The /eɪ/ Diphthong in words: • Here are 10 great words to practice using this diphthong: • Hey • Mate • Eight • Dates • Same • Waiting • Amazing • Patiently • Favourite • Aggregate • Step 5 - Learn To Use The /eɪ/ Diphthong In Sentences • Practice these 3 sentences to get comfortable using the /eɪ/ diphthong in real English speech: • Hey Jane, thanks for waiting patiently. • Eight mates went on dates on the same day. • The change in the way we pay for grain is amazing. • Do you feel like your English pronunciation is as good as it could be?
