Mammals are warm-blooded animals with a body covered in hair or fur. Another characteristic of mammals is the way in which they reproduce. Mammals reproduce by internal fertilization. Rather than laying eggs, the young develops within its mother. Once mature, the mother gives birth to live young. The mother nurses the newborn with milk until it is able to feed on its own. Some mammals, like kangaroos and koalas, are marsupials. Marsupials are mammals that give birth to partially developed young. The newborn is then cared for in a pouch attached to the • female parent. Platypuses and spiny anteaters are unique types of egg-laying mammals called monotremes. These mammals can only be found in Australia and New Guinea. • Mammals have lungs and take in oxygen when they breathe in air. Aquatic mammals, such as dolphins, sea lions and whales, must come to the surface to breathe. Adult mammals often care for their young until they are old enough to survive on their own. They may teach their young how to find food or hunt. They may also teach them how to stay safe from other animals.
