I needed to add another MERGEFIELD to a word document that was originally created in Word 2007 or earlier which saved them as simpleField types. Starting with Word 2010, merge fields were saved differently, saving as a fieldChar type. I needed to maintain the original format due to the file being used by a different application, so I had to change the underlying XML instead of opening the file directly from Word.
