In reality, their default background is transparent. • Under the View menu is the option Show Transparency Grid. This is a toggle that reads as Hide Transparency Grid when the grid is active. When active, a checkerboard pattern will be displayed wherever there is transparency. • Transparency Grid keyboard shortcut: • Command/Control + Shift + D • Were a file that supports transparency be exported out, the areas where the checkerboard pattern is displayed would be rendered as transparent. • • 0:51 - Adding a Background Color • There is no option within Illustrator to activate a solid background color. The simple solution is to draw a rectangle that covers the entire Artboard and fill that rectangle with what is to be the background color. • • 1:30 - Locking Background Rectangle • The background rectangle can be easily accidentally moved. Locking this rectangle in some manner is often a preferable way to work... • Lock Object • With the rectangle selected, from the menu choose... • Object - Lock - Selection • Create Multiple Layers • Within the Layers panel, multiple layers can be created. Create and lock a background layer. Create layers above the background layer to support all of the other design elements.
