2nd track from Eye in the Sky (1982). Fed-up lover or Big Brother? Or something even more sinister? It all depends on how deeply you want to delve into the concepts of this British progressive-rock band's cryptic 1982 album. • Regardless, I've always thought this hypnotically smooth song—with the all-seeing-eye-of-God-eye-of-Horus-Illuminati-Masonic-symbol-floating-thingamabob motif—had the coolest sound around and could easily be the theme song for all things conspiratorial. It hit #3 on the Billboard charts in the US (#1 in both Canada and Spain, and #6 in New Zealand) and was their most successful release (ironically, it didn't fare well in the UK). • And, okay, geez, now I'm afraid this song is going to be stuck in my head for the rest of the day— Lookin' at you, lookin' at you...! Yeah, here's lookin' at you, kid. I'm spying on you in more ways than you can even imagine—from smartphones, wi-fi, social media, internet searches, web history, texts emails, credit, debit, loyalty cards, drones, satellites, GPS apps, public space cameras, digital recognition technology, even TVs, dishwashers, refrigerators washing machines to now your Fitbit Echo Dot. So don't be at all paranoid and have a super nice day! • ~thatMimosaGrove • * • Don't think sorry's easily said • Don't try turning tables instead • You've taken lots of chances before • But I'm not gonna give anymore • Don't ask me • That's how it goes • 'Cause part of me knows what you're thinkin' • Don't say words you're gonna regret • Don't let the fire rush to your head • I've heard the accusation before • And I ain't gonna take any more • Believe me • The sun in your eyes • Made some of the lies worth believing • I am the eye in the sky • Looking at you • I can read your mind • I am the maker of rules • Dealing with fools • I can cheat you blind • And I don't need to see any more • To know that • I can read your mind, I can read your mind • Don't leave false illusions behind • Don't cry 'cause I ain't changing my mind • So find another fool like before • 'Cause I ain't gonna live anymore believing • Some of the lies while all of the signs are deceiving • Songwriters: • WOOLFSON, ERIC / PARSONS, ALAN / LELEY BERTAZZO, WANDERLEY BERTAZZO PINTO / LUIZ BATISTA, LUIZ ANTONIO BATISTA MONTAGNA • * • Rumor has it that this song gets its theme from George Orwell's 1984, which revolves around a dystopian future where citizens are constantly monitored by a totalitarian world government. However, even the official page of the Alan Parsons project that talks about this song doesn't mention any connection. There is also nothing in the lyrics to connect it with this novel—those of us who have actually read the book know that there are no specific references to eyes in the sky i.e. satellites and such, but just cameras and telescreens everywhere. Meanwhile, the lyrics make no reference to Big Brother, Ingsoc, Newspeak, proles, ministries, Room 101, and so on, which is common jargon in the book. So, let's just say this is unconfirmed, and caution people about making snap judgments regarding a novel which has become such a potent counter-culture icon in exactly the same way that Guy Fawkes—and Che Guevara before him—became counter-culture fashion. Otherwise we'd end up with a doubleplusungood untruth. • A little more credible is the claim that it's a reference to ceiling cameras, particularly in casinos, where the same term eye in the sky is used. However, the basic message is that of somebody dumping a lover, while asserting that they know too well how the reaction will be. • ~ http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?i... • * • Alan Parsons didn't think highly of this song and had to be convinced to put it on the album. As Eric Woolfson (who sings lead on it) tells it, he and the other musicians loved the song, but Parsons thought so little of it that he bet their guitarist Ian Bairnson that it would not be a hit. • The cover art to the album Eye in the Sky has the famous Egyptian symbol of the eye of Horus. Horus was one of the bird-headed Egyptian gods, with the head of a falcon. The eye symbol itself—in ironic contradiction to the lyrics—meant protection, power, and health. • ~ http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?i... • *** • Image Credits (other than album art, in order of appearance): Jacob Jung / Elroy Serrao / 1967jwm / AdolfGalland / Diana K / Alan / duncan c / kuuipo1207 FrantasticMakeup / Claudio Sepúlveda Geoffroy / Rafael Gonzalez / Pieter Edelman / Riccardo Meneghini / Blake Lennon / Ken Banks / Augusto Serna / Glen Scott / M2e-Fx / Paul Rowe / European Southern Observatory / Nerdcoresteve / Stuart Rankin / Oxfam Italia / Craig Edwards / Simon Roberts / expanse.collectivepress.com / rogiro / pumpkincat210 / Photon™ / parantingbythelightofthemoon.blogspot.com / Agnes / thealchemistical.tumblr.com / Jeremy Tarling / Joseph Morris / Peter Shanks / damian entwistle • https://creativecommons.org/licenses/...
