Media given access to Russias air base in Syria

(26 Sep 2019) The Russian Defence Ministry on Thursday took reporters to an airbase in the Syrian province of Latakia to show off an SU-35 fighter among other assets in operation there. • The Hemeimeem base, which Russia calls Khmeimim, has served as the main hub for Russian operations in Syria since it started its military campaign in September 2015. • It allowed Syrian President Bashar Assad's government to reclaim control over most of the country following a devastating civil war. • The group of reporters were taken to Hemeimeem and shown troops train as well as aircraft taking off and landing. • Separately, reporters were also shown by the defence ministry a missile corvette sailing off on patrol and a group of navy divers practicing at Tartus harbor. • As part of its efforts to restore the Soviet-era practice of keeping warships on a permanent vigil in the Mediterranean, Russia has moved to modernise and expand the naval facility in Tartus. • It's is the only such facility Russia has outside the former Soviet Union. • Next month, the Russian navy plans to open a maintenance shop in Tartus that will further bolster the base's capability. • • Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork • Twitter: / ap_archive • Facebook: / aparchives • Instagram: / apnews • • • You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
