Understanding Fractures and Reservoir Quality in Tight Sandstones – Coupled Effects of Diagenesis and Deformation • Presented by Qiqi Wang • Discussion Topics: • 1) Mechanism for maintaining open fractures at reservoir depths in a sandstone with long diagenetic history. 2) Quantitative characterization of fracture abundance and spatial organization within the Nugget sandstone, East Painter Reservoir anticline • Key messages: • 1) Residual fracture porosity observed at great depth (greater than 4.5km), open pore space persisted for ~45my under diagenetic conditions • 2) Rock composition matters: Feldspar and lithics help retain fracture porosity under extensive quartz cementation • 3) Structural position matters: Fracture pattern and character varies with structural position • Bio: • Qiqi is a Ph.D. candidate in Geological Sciences at UT Austin. She's working with the Fracture Research and Application Consortium at Bureau of Economic geology. At UT, she had opportunities to look at natural fractures in various locations, ages and rock types. Two tasks for Qiqi's dissertation research: 1.Integrating outcrop and subsurface data, to gain better understanding on how deformation and diagenesis together modifies the reservoir property. 2.Adopting and adapting various statistical methods to improve diagnosis and prediction of fracture attributes/patterns, and rock properties. Concurrently with a PhD, Qiqi is pursuing an MS in statistics at UT, trying to apply the skills to analyzing petrographical and fracture data. Apart from work, Qiqi is an animal lover, a home cook, and an outdoor enthusiast. • References: • Calcite and dolomite bridging: • Gale, J.F., Lander, R.H., Reed, R.M. and Laubach, S.E., 2010.
