Setting up the Mold Ep 2 Cedar Strip Canoe Build

In this video I explain how I set up my mold for the cedar strip canoe I am building. The mold is kind of like a big plywood skeleton that you wrap the cedar strips onto. Here is a step by step process: • Make a strong back - the strong back is a long skinny table that you mount the molds onto. I made mine out of plywood. • Cut out the molds - for each mold, screw two pieces of plywood together, draw a line up the center, then trace a half templates On one side of the line, flip your template over and trace the other half. Cut the shape out plans and unscrew the molds. • Mounting the molds - snap a chalk line down the center of your strong back, mount 2x2 blocks along the strong back at 1 foot intervals. Mount the end pieces first then rig a string from the top of one to the top of the other mount the molds to the blocks using the chalk line and the strong to center everything. • Things to remember • Take your time! The more time you spend making sure your mold is exactly perfect the fewer problems you will have down the road building and the better the canoe will perform in the water. I spend A LOT of time making sure everything is square and level and plumb. • Put tape on the edges of the molds so you don’t glue the strips onto the molds. • A trick to making forms match - after you cut them and unscrew them flip one over and sit them up next to each other. If they are cut perfectly they should still match. If not sand the edges and flip them back and forth until they’re really close. • There are lots of resources on the internet explaining different ways to do this. Check out how other people set their molds up until you find a way you’re comfortable with! • Feel free to comment on this video if you have any questions!
