Meet Breanne. She has worked at the Toronto Zoo for 10 years. • Red pandas are one of many animals Breanne and Eurasia Keepers care for every day. From Barbary apes to Bactrian camels to Steller’s sea eagles and Przewalski horses, a great team with a variety of skills and experience benefits the animals that call Eurasia home. • Red pandas are a unique animal and require special considerations when caring for them. Red pandas eat bamboo which can be challenging to keep fresh and appetizing, but Keepers work closely with the Zoo’s Nutrition branch to ensure there’s never a shortage. Ralphie (seen below) is 10-years old and spends his days with our 3-year-old female Malina. Red pandas are nocturnal and sleep a lot throughout the day, so Breanne and other Keepers need to complete most of the daily training early in the morning, and leave enrichment for them to interact with when they are most active during that time. Part of being a Keeper is also getting to know individual animals, their needs, and their personalities. For instance, did you know that Ralphie is a picky eater, whereas Malina loves any type of food? Red pandas are also temperature sensitive, so the Keepers ensure the temperature is just right or the red pandas may need to stay indoors for the day. • Red pandas, like Malina and Ralphie, are listed as Endangered mostly due to habitat loss and are also impacted by global warming as red pandas have adapted to a colder climate. A way you can help is lowering your carbon footprint and thus reducing the greenhouse gasses that commit to climate change. #KeepersCare #NZKW2018
