Normal newborn behavior. While mouthing is a common sign that baby is hungry, mouthing is a normal newborn behavior throughout the day. They are exploring their new environment with their lips, tongues, bodies and hands. They have been doing this for their entire journey in utero. But if you haven’t been around a lot of newborns, these signs can be very confusing. These same behaviors that signal hunger may also signal they’re tired and trying to go to sleep, working on a poop, or have a burp they’re bringing up. Usually when a baby is hungry, mouthing is accompanied by rooting (turning the head back and forth to try to find a nipple), bringing hands to mouth, licking of the lips, making sounds and eventually crying, and wiggling the body. This newborn is mouthing and licking, moving his hands, but is not actually hungry. Babies are excellent communicators and speak their own language with their whole bodies. Like learning French, it can take a while for you to learn what they’re trying to say. Your unique baby will communicate their needs in their own way and you’ll eventually learn their language by patient study. When in doubt, boob out. If your baby won’t take your breast, DON’T BLAME THE BREAST. Babies can only focus on one hole at a time. So if they don’t want the breast in their mouth, they’re most likely focusing on what’s going to come out the other end. • . • . • . • #normalnewborn #normalizebreastfeeding #normalnewbornbehavior #newbornbehavior #newbornbaby #feedingcues #newbornfeeding #newbornfeedingcues #feedme #breastfeedinglicious #breastfeedingmom #breastfeedingjourney #breastfedbabe
