In case of an alarm a valve opens and the • air is chopped by a small 24 volt motor at the top of the siren. A diesel engine refills the air tank and charges the accumulators. A few hundred of these high-power-sirens were set up in Germany during Cold War. They were able to operate autarkic but today the technology is very unreliable and expensive to maintain so today these sirens are very rare in Germany.
