Home winemakers face to choose a method to top up wine after racking for aging. The often used methods are to add cool water, add similar wine, add marbles and use multiple size vessels. All the methods above have limitation. Cool water will dilute wine and flavor. It is not recommended. Similar good wine may not be always available. Marbles are small, often not uniform or are not polished enough for easy clean and sanitation. Multiple size vessels will require more sanitation work. Rack is a way of clarifying wine.
