Tempered glass is first heated, then cooled to create a permanent internal tension/compression within the glass in excess of 10,000 pounds per square inch. When a crack starts, it propagates at many times the speed of sound! Here, I slow down a video so you can see that the large piece of tempered glass is fully shattered within the time of one video frame, which is 1/30th of a second.
