Here dam is built on a large river that has a large drop in elevation. The dam stores lots of water behind it in the reservoir. A large hole is provided near the bottom of the dam wall for water intake. Gravity causes it to fall through the penstock inside the dam. Turbine propeller is placed at the end of the penstock, which is rotates due to the moving water. The shaft from the turbine is connected to the generator, which produces the power.
